'Picaninnies in Cotton'
Oil on canvas, 34" x 39"
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Third Prize, Group 3: Cotton Fields
Picaninnies in Cotton is not a "politically correct" painting by today's standards and must be viewed as a work in it's time. The artist has chosen to portray the stereotypical image of the African-American field worker, with almost doll-like little girls in the foreground. Although the artist is competent, there is almost a folk art quality to this painting, which gives it a charm rather than presence. -RC
