'Evening Shades'
Oil on canvas, 37" x 35'
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Fifth Prize, Group 1: Texas Wildflowers (open division) P.L. Hohnstedt, 'Evening Shade', 1929 [5K]

Hohnstedt's favorite color must have been turquoise, as it is seen in nearly all his compositions. Evening Shades is somewhat impressionistic; the strongly shadowed foreground is painted in deep blue, while the valley and mountains in the background are saturated with light, allowing the artist to use his typical pastel palette and turquoise coloration. -RC

'Sunshine and Shadow'
Oil on canvas, 29" x 35'
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Second Prize, Group 4: Texas Wildflowers (Texas Division) P.L. Hohnstedt, 'Sunshine and Shadow', 1929 [8K]

Sunshine and Shadow is meant to be viewed from a distance. Unlike Evening Shades, the artist has separated colors with rather large brush strokes, which, when viewed up close, segment the painted surface. When the viewer steps back, the colors blend to create beautiful tonal graduations and great depth of perceptive. -RC
